Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Boise

Total Budget: $1,540

Areas of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Peace: General

Summary: Purchase / install a 'peace pole' displaying children's stories and descriptions of local native flora/fauna for general public at the Rotary Wetland Peace Preserve in Boise, Idaho.

With continued growth and congestion in the Treasure valley, there is need for open space where people can enjoy a natural setting within the urban area. Given the turmoil of the past year, including political and racial tensions, a setting focused on peace and tranquility is clearly valuable. Also, the Boise Parks Department is looking for help developing and maintaining an 18 acre site along the Boise river that is infested with non-native invasive plants and hoping to educate the public about the value of native species. Native species will help reduce river bank erosion and improve Boise River water quality. In response to these needs, 9 Treasure Valley Clubs have come together to partner with BPD to develop the Rotary Wetland Pease Preserve. The RWPP will include "peace poles" provide by each club. These poles will display monthly updated peace and/or nature themed children's stories, plus descriptive content about native species. Requested funds will support the Boise Club's pole, which is expected to be installed late in 2021-22 fiscal year. Rotarians are providing volunteer labor to plant and maintain native species in the preserve, plus plan the peace pole content.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

It became clear our original peace pole project was being greatly delayed due to City of Boise approval processes. However, during the winter and spring of 2022, our club partnered with the Whitney School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) on a project to paint beautiful outdoor scene murals in the alcoves of the classroom hallway "wings" at Whitney School. Whitney is a Title One elementary school in Boise and probably the most challenged in terms of socio economic demographics. The murals were a top priority for the school and PTO as a way to improve the alcoves as a learning environment and enhance pride among the students in their school. The murals were completed in April 2022. Our club provided $3,700 in funding for this project. In addition, our club has been actively involved with hands on activities at the school, such as playing the Spot It game at "game day" with the 2nd graders.

This project is underway. The Peace Poles designs are still pending final Rotary approvals. We expect they will be completed and installed in late 2022 or early 2023. Funds in the amount of $1,500 were disbursed to Rotary 5400 Charitable Programs, Inc in December, 2021.

A grant report is due no later than May 15th, 2023. Failure to report by the deadline may impact your club's ability to receive a grant in 2023-24 Rotary year. For final report, download the report form from the administration side of the description tab. Fill it out, being sure that the expenses listed in the report match your receipts and any other documentation of expenses you provide. Upload pdf copies of your report and the receipts to the documents tab of your grant. Then click "reported", a button on the administration side of the description tab. If the project is not done, file a progress report - a history log telling us when you started the project, what % complete you are & when you plan to finish it out. Call Marianne 208 308-5617 if you have questions about reporting.

The peace pole designs have now been completed and approved by the Wetland Peace Preserve committee. The overall project has been delayed by one year, because a redesign was needed to avoid any development of the wetland conservation easement. Final project approval by the City of Boise is expected summer 2023, with groundbreaking expected fall 2023 or spring 2024.

Fred - Are you confidant the pole will be planted in the ground at the Peace Park by the end of August? If not, we need to start pivoting on this project now. Rotary Foundation district grants must be completed within two years of receiving the grant. Your grant check was written 8/23/21 & you would have received it in a few days. Might be best for us to talk. Please call me at 208 308-5617. Marianne Barker
