Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Grapevine/Colleyville, TX

Total Budget: $8,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Scholarships

Summary: School supplies for needy students and a scholarship to TCC for a needy student.

There are 1,231 students from low income families that qualify for the school lunch program and who registered to recieve free school supplies. This grant will supply approximately 256 of these kits at a cost of $9,500. They will be needed when school starts. Approximately 12 Rotarians will be involved with receiving and packaging the school supplies and then will help distributing them.

In addition, we intend to give a $1,500 scholarship to a GCISD student who we supported as a Youth Exchange student who went to Brazil last year. His family is basically dysfunctional and cannot support him. This grant will provide the first year's tuition at TCC and then it will be matched by TCC for his second year providing he takes the required number of credit hours and maintains the appropriate grade point average. Matthew Hillery has applied and been accepted for study to begin this fall at the Northeast Campus. Matthew has been interveiwed several times by GRC Rotarians and he kept in contact during his year in Brazil. PDG Jim Aneff has been his mentor and has maintained frequent contact with him during the past two years. Matthew will be speaking to the GRC at our September 4th club meeting about his experiences in Brazil and his plans for the future, including his studies at TCC.
