The schools in the area of the Rotary Club Roatan, Honduras, are old and the number of students has multiplied. To help alleviate the plight of the underprivileged children in their area who cannot afford to attend a better school, the Roatan Club of Roatan has put together an Education Program which in part provides scholarships for the most qualified and deserving students. This grant will provide a scholarship for each of two worthy students chosen by the Rotary Club Roatan. This is a fairly new Rotary Club of which Dr. Parchment is the Club President 2013-14. He also chairs their Club Education Committee and is an Education Consultant and Administrator by profession.
This year, the Board of the Rotary Club of Roatan approved eleven student candidates who met their 90% academic requirement and are from low income families. The cost per student cost of $1800 per year each covers the cost of registration, monthly tuition, transportation, uniform, books and education materials. To qualify for a scholarship, the student must first fill out a questionnaire and be interviewed by the Club committee. These forms can be seen in the Document section. During their scholarship year, the students must maintain the 90% and above scores and they must submit their scores at the end of each semester or scoring cycle. If they fall below, they are put on probation for a semester. The scholarship is suspended for any student who continues to score lower than 90%. In addition, the scholarship awardee must demonstrate good behavior and participate in community service activities.
Dr. Parchment personally delivers the scholarship checks to each school on a monthly basis, at which time he talks with the principals and gets an update on each student. The students submit their grades to the Club committee as soon as they receive them from the schools. One of their recent scholarship students graduated in June as a Nurse Aide.
This project can be completed within 6 months.
