Underpriviledge students in several areas in Orange County do not have the opportunity to leave their community on organized field trips for a better understanding of their surroundings and related responsibilities. The Ocean Institute in Dana Point (www. ocean-institute.org) provides field trips to learn about marine sciences, marine history and to study the ocean environment while improving students' citizenship skills. Rotarians will participate in selecting the classes (schools) and meet / interact with the students on the boat trips.
The project will sponsor a minimum of three trips, each for up to 40 underserved students, including all course fees and transportation costs. The donation amount for 1 boat program is $3,000 (see attached document). Because of the magnitude of our donation ($8,000), Ms. Kat Dej-Panah, Adopt-A-Class Manager, will arrange for at least 3 boat programs; maybe more depending on school (s) selection.
A newspaper arcticle with photos will be submitted for publication in the Orange County Register.
The project will be started on 1 October 2013 and will be completed by 31 December 2013.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
The completion date has been changed from 31 December 2013 to 31 April 2014. Students from King Elementary School will have their day at the Dana Point Ocean Institute on 4 April 2014.
