Project Description

Country: Uganda

Location: Buhoma

Total Budget: $1,500

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Piggery to benefit the Batwa pygmies

Background/Problem:

Buhoma Town Council is one of the most tourist destinations in Uganda. Bwindi National Parks is a home for not only the endangered Mountain Gorillas and other animals but also for vulnerable people especially the youth Batwa pygmies and other needy families. Bwindi harbors a total population of approximately 8,600 people. Over 6,000 people live below the poverty line thus declared as poorest of poor, this means that they cannot afford to buy piglets. By providing them with a piggery and piglets we will allow them to generate some revenue and improve their living conditions.

Target Beneficiaries:

The beneficiaries will be asked to pay a fee of 1,000 shillings (about 30 cents) to show a commitment to the project. They will receive training from the Bwindi Batwa Cultural Organization staff on how to raise the pigs. When the pigs produce new piglets some of them will be kept to get new beneficiary participants.

How many Beneficiaries:

The project shall start to Benefit 10 Households/Homesteads and later on this number shall increase. When the first batch of 10 Old Pigs are bought and cared for, after they give birth the project shall seek addition of newly youth beneficiary members to benefit from the send a Piglet Program. The project will be overseen and monitored by the team and staff from Bwindi Batwa Cultural Organization of Which is the implementing partner.

Monitoring Evaluation& Reporting:

The Project will have a Project supervisor's who shall be selected on merit. Monthly progress information will be done by the project supervisor. The compilation report will be prepared at the end of month until the first batch of 10 Old Pigs- have all given birth.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

This project was recorded as completed in March 2022 because the funds were sent to the Rotary Club in Uganda for implementation. Since then, there has been an issue with the cooperating organization that decided they did not want to do such a small project. The Rotary Club of Kihihi suggested that the fund would be redirected to another project to purchase a tricycle ambulance for timely transportation of pregnant mothers from one of the disadvantaged communities to health facilities for safe motherhood care. The ambulance would be handed over to the health department of Kanungu district local government for subsequent running costs. We secured the approval for this change of the Del Mar Rotary Club International Service Committee, as well as the Rotary District 5340 Foundation Committee.
