Project Description

Country: Uganda

Location: Several Communities

Total Budget: $6,967

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Provide education and basic subsistence for disadvantaged Ugandan students.

Malayika Rescue Mission (MRM) is a 501(c)3 organization founded by Ugandan-born, Mid-Cities Pacesetters (MCP) Rotarian, Jolly Kahunde. MRM focuses on educating children in Fort Portal and other locales in western Uganda by paying tuition, providing uniforms, personal hygiene items, clothing, medicines, school supplies, bedding, transportation and basic needs to 45-50 students enrolled in 10+ schools in Uganda. In addition to schooling, MRM staff and volunteers teach farming (yams and corn) and animal husbandry (pigs) to the students and adults.

Based on last year's expenditures of $6,967 in the third term when COVID limited attendance was only 28 students, expenses in the coming fall term could exceed $12,000 if attendance returns to pre-COVID levels. Many of these students are HIV positive. Added medications and deveopmental initiatives may tax our resources beyond our ability to pay.

This grant plus additional Rotary Club and outside funding may allow MRM to maintain enrollment for the rest of the year, but if not, then a reduction in numbers of students will be necessary. For the purpose of this grant we are using last trimester expenses as our grant request amount.

Four MCP Rotary club members participate. Jollie Kahunde and Bill Bracken are board members and individual contributors to MRM, Sharon Cox is a contributor and advisor to MRM, Reggie Parr submits Form 990-EZ to IRS and provides compliance with District 5790 Financial Management requirements.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

To meet reduced budget projections enrollment was reduced for 2022 1st Term (January-April) and 2nd Term (May-August) to a total of eight students with six in Secondary 5 and two in Secondary 6. Elementary enrollment is temporarily suspended. Budget now at $3742.86 per term for those eight students.

Actual total budget was revised to $6,500 with District 5790 contribution of $3,000 and Mid-Cities Pacesetters (Bedford) RC contribution of $3,500 due to reduction of available funding from Mid-Cities Pacesetters (Bedford) RC.
