The Rotary Club of Anaheim hosts upwards of 120 underserved inner-city kids from the Boys and Girls Club, the YMCA, Cops-4-kids, and Orangewood Children's home for a day of fishing at Jenks Lake in the Sanbernardino National Forest. We partner with the volunteers of the U.S. Forest service who's volunteers take care of the fishing tackle and the instruction. The Rotary club furnishes the transportation and enough food for 400 people including the kids, the volunteers, and the available Fire Fighters in the area. Many of these kids have never seen a lake or a forest and it follows that they have never been fishing before. Other activities include, sawing logs in half, making braded ropes like the indians and pioneers did, and learning about forest and water conservation. Each kid leaves with a section of log with a branded US Forest service logo on it. Quite a day, with great food, a great souvineer, and in some cases, the catch of a life time!
Back pack School Supplies project: This is a community service project for school children from low-income families. These new backpacks loaded with school suppies will alleviate some of the peer pressure experienced by these children. Too many children in our community are falling behind in school and life before they even get started. This will help them with their self-esteem, creativity and confidence. Every member in the club will be involved either purchasing the supplies, backpacks or filling the back packs, writing personal notes of encouragement to the distribution of the backpacks to the children.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
