Project Description Country: USA Location: Yorktown, New York Total Budget: $5,000 Areas of Focus: Community economic development, The environment Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation Summary: Granite Knolls Sensory Garden - The creation of a Sensory Garden will enhance our park and create a place for children, veterans and seniors to have a place to explore their senses. A Sensory Garden at Granite Knolls. All Club members will participate along with the Yorktown Special Education PTA and Lakeland Special PTA, all monies raised will go directly to the creation of the garden. Who in the Yorktown community would benefit from a Sensory Garden: Over 200 families in Yorktown have one or more children with a developmental disability Statistically Yorktown is the home to approximately 1000 Veterans who suffer from PTSD 65+ population totals close to 750 seniors who suffer from Alzheimer's / Dementia These numbers will continue to increase year over year We Can... Create a sense of community Create a space for Tranquility Create a haven for stress release Create a place to explore your senses Jasmine, Lavender & Peppermint are proven to lower stress and anxiety levels through sense of smell Lamb's Ear - provides soothing sensation to the touch Water Feature - evokes all the senses for the visually impaired • All indigenous perineal plants can be used Community Involvement: Create a Life Skills Program • Annual Veteran Gardening Program • Senior Citizen Gardening Program • Scouts of America (SOA) Community Service Hours • Graduating High School Seniors Community Service Hours • Community Service Hours for Religious communities • Garden Club Involvement • Book Clubs • Yoga Classes • Class Trips from Yorktown Community Schools • Sensory wall designed by children of all abilities • Outdoor Art Projects • Yearly Community Events • Adopt a Planter-Bench Program The Possibilities are Endless We anticipate these project being started in the spring of 2022, it will be an ongoing project until it is finished.
