2021 is the 20th anniversary of the terrible attacks against the US on 9/11/2001. Schoolchildren today were not alive when the attacks occurred. Rotary Club of Eastchester (RCE) has identified a need to educate local middle school children, and interested adults, about the events of that day and the ways in which Americans pulled together to respond and help each other afterwards.
RCE will address this need by sponsoring the 9/11 Remembered Traveling Memorial to visit Eastchester, NY for two days. RCE is collaborating with school administrators from Eastchester and Tuckahoe to schedule middle school students from both districts to visit the museum for guided tours and history lessons. RCE is partnering with the Foley Family Foundation to fund this event. RCE is also partnering with local fire, police, and EMS responders, as well as local veterans, to conduct public ceremonies to celebrate the start and conclusion of this event. Almost all of RCE's membership will participate in the planning and/or execution of this event.
RCE believes that this event falls under RI's "Basic Education" area of focus. RCE further believes that this project addresses a critical educational need to understand the events of 9/11 and the historical significance of those events, as well as its aftermath.
RCE will provide financial sponsorship of this project totaling at least $6,800, and we are requesting a $2,500 matching grant from the District.
Given the late District 7230 grant process this year, RCE had to commit to this project prior to the District Grant Certification sessions and application process. RCE made attempts to contact the Grant Committee about this event prior to the event but we were unsuccessful. This event occurred on September 29th and 30th and was very well received by the students, school administrators, and the larger community.
We respectfully request that the District Grant Committee consider funding this event given the critical educational need that it addressed and our good faith efforts to contact the District Grant Committee prior to the event.
