IDENTIFIED NEEDS
Orange Sunrise Rotary (OSR) has supported the Interact Club at El Modena High School (EMHS) for over 10 years. Alexis Greenlee, our Interact Advisor, is also the lead teacher for a California Partnership Academy at the school. The Collaborative Technology Program (CTP) Academy targets at-risk high school students in a program that focuses on student success. Academy grant guidelines require connecting students with local business/community mentors. In the past, EMHS has struggled with the mentoring and business connection component of the grant. Alexis Greenlee approached Orange Sunrise Rotary to see if we could help.
HOW THE PROJECT WILL MEET THOSE NEEDS
Mrs. Greenlee met with OSR Youth Chair, Chris Hale and OSR Vocational Service Chair, Teri Snyder to brainstorm possible collaborative options. The outcome was a draft for Mentor Meals, a project that will move four OSR weekly meetings to the high school library where Rotarians will have the opportunity to dine, interact with and mentor 45 CTP high school juniors. These dinner programs will consist of a light meal, a guest speaker and related table topic activities. Table assignments will match two adult mentors consistently with the same six students each meeting.
Possible meeting topics include ethical decision making, service to others, interpersonal communication skills, personal finance, using social media, etc. The curriculum for the table topic activities will come from the Learning for Life - Navigator, A Personal Compass for Daily Living.
To assist with organization and manpower needs, Mrs. Greenlee will establish a student leadership team. OSR will provide financial support for this group to attend the fall Exploring Leadership Training Workshop. The Rotarians will work closely with the leadership team to teach them how to run well-organized, meaningful meetings.
We realized that because OSR is a small club, we will need help. Teri Snyder contacted the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and they are enthusiastic to join the collaboration. They will be responsible for recruiting addition mentors (many former EMHS graduates), providing guest speakers, establishing/financing the CTP as a Hispanic Chamber Career Exploring Club, and $500 in scholarship funds. Financial contributions from the Hispanic Chamber are NOT included in the grant budget. Hispanic Chamber mentors will experience the work of Rotary in their community, and we will encourage their future membership in our club.
In addition to mentoring the CTP junior class, OSR will also work with the 25 seniors in the program. Seniors all prepare a final project that is presented before an outside judging panel. OS Rotarians will volunteer to judge the senior projects.
CTP ends first semester with a celebration to recognize mid -year milestones. OSR will fund the celebration. The school year ends with an annual awards banquet. OSR will participate in this event to recognize students, applaud accomplishments and award scholarships.
