Project Description

Country: Mexico

Location: Near Ensinada

Total Budget: $4,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Supporting Rancho Sordo Mudo, a non-profit, non government supported school for deaf children in Mexico.

n the RI area of focus, Basic Education and Literacy, the San Clemente Sunrise Rotary Club (SCSRC) has supported Rancho Sordo Mudo (RSM) since 1998. RSM is the only free residential home and school for disadvantaged deaf children in Mexico. The students reside there for 9 months; 24/7.The school receives no support from the Mexican Government. Our club has made significant contributions to RSM, and having a matching District Grant will double our effort and our impact on these kids who rely upon our club and others like us.

RSM's primary needs are first and foremost food, to feed the students and staff who reside there for 9 to 10 months. Second, the electrical and propane power necessary to cook their food and light their classrooms. Third, supplies for the maintenance of their buildings and vehicles. Forth, supplies for teaching in their classrooms. The starting date for this grant is immediately upon approval.

SCSRC Rotarians make several trips per year to the RSM. The first, usually in late August, is to purchase food supplies to help feed the students and staff for the first half of the year. This year, the first visit will be upon approval of the grant. In past years our Rotarians would buy the food locally and deliver it to them. Now, our Rotarians go to the area and buy the food at their local Costco, which eliminates the issues surrounding importing.

Another trip is made in January to deliver gifts to the students and staff, called "Christmas in January." The gifts are not a part of this grant request.

This year another trip will be made (or the January trip extended) to allow for Rotarian help in facility or vehicular maintenance projects for the school.

In all, 100% of the SCSRC Rotarians participate directly in this project.

To accomplish the four elements of this project, we will contribute $ 2,000 with a District match of $ 2,000 for a total of $4,000.
