The San Clemente Sunrise Rotary Club has been working with the Ocean Institute for many years under the focus of Basic Education and Literacy. In each of these programs, approximately half of our members will take part. In the Advanced Floating lab, approximately 8 members will act as monitors, under the direction of Ocean Institute Staff and the Teachers. Regarding the younger children in the "House for Hermit Crab Lab, approximately 12 members will help the teachers and the OI staff shepherd the 150 kindergartners.
Advanced Floating Lab:
Student oceanographers, from San Clemente High School, apply sampling and research protocols for water chemistry and biological monitoring. Students participate in a chlorophyll productivity analysis and phytoplankton biotoxin analysis. Equipment available includes an otter trawl net, plankton net, benthic grab sampler, water capture bottles, a bioacoustic array, side scan sonar, CTD water analyzer, and a weather/navigation station.
A House for Hermit Crab Lab:
Students will learn the difference between fact and fiction as they use lab equipment and our aquariums to compare and contrast live organisms with literary creatures from the book A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle. These students come from San Onofre Elementary School, which serves, primarily, Marine families from Camp Pendleton.
These programs bring children of many economic levels together to experience the wonders of the sea. For many, this starts them on the road to their life's work. These are programs that change children's lives.
The Budget is $3,000 for the Advanced Floating Lab and $2,500 for the Hermit Crab Lab.
