Community Development: General
Summary: Homer Parks and Recreation Improvements
Outdoor recreational spaces are essential to our mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. The Rotary Club of Homer-Kachemak Bay has left its mark on parks, gardens, and trails throughout the Homer community. During the 2022-2023 Rotary year we intend to give these important places some TLC so they are as inviting as possible to the community. In addition, we are teaming with the City of Homer to improve the playground facilities at Bayview Park. This is a small park in a residential neighborhood mostly used by families with young children. Our goal is to purchase equipment designed for use by younger children. We have checked off four areas of focus because we believe the outdoors provides a perfect setting for peace building and conflict prevention; we know the outdoors is important to disease prevention, as well as maternal and child health; and well-cared for parks and outdoor spaces are a key ingredient to community economic development, used year-round by residents and visitors. We will use funds from our third peony sales event , the annual Cranium Cup Trivia Contest and a lot of club "sweat equity" to complete as much of the work as possible. In addition to the equipment purchase, members will clean and sand benches, cut brush open some areas for better visibility and safety, plant flowers, refurbish/replace boundary posts, and do as much as possible to make these places as lovely and user-friendly as possible.

At the close out of the Rotary 2022-2023 year, the Rotary Club of Homer-Kachemak Bay used DDF 4218 to significantly improve the Ben Walters appearance and community usability through the construction of a "Yellow Brick Road" to follow between park apparatus, and the maintenance of previously constructed picnic tables and trails. Grant money was used to by pavers which were installed using Club sweat equity.
In partnership with the City of Homer, grant funds were expended to purchase recreation equipment for Bayview Park which is undergoing redesign and renovation.
