Project Description Country: USA Location: Boise ID Total Budget: $12,100 Areas of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: General Summary: To inspire 100 low-income students in Boise Idaho to graduate and seek post high school educations by providing them with life skills and building their self-confidence The goal of Everyday Leadership is to inspire low-income fifth and sixth grade students to graduate and pursue post high school educations. Students who fail to graduate or achieve post-high school training are frequently unprepared for the workplace and are especially vulnerable to negative influences. They become a breeding ground for the social and economic issues being experienced in Treasure Valley communities. This is a serious problem. Everyday Leadership seeks to build students' self-confidence and equip them with life skills including leadership, teamwork, communication, cooperation, conflict resolution, and decision making. Classes are taught by public school teachers and YMCA instructors. Rotarians lead discussions with the youth to hear what they are learning and how they are applying their new skills. Community service projects are implemented in neighborhoods near the schools. Activities occur throughout the school year. This is a collaborative effort uniting the resources of • Public schools provide teachers and counselors to serve as lead instructors and monitor results. • Treasure Valley YMCA provides the class curriculum, facilities for events and an assistant instructor. • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Idaho provides student mentors as needed. • Rotarians from the Boise Metro and Boise Sunrise Rotary Clubs facilitate collaboration; provide funding, provide physical labor as needed and monitor progress through regular discussions with the students and analysis of their performance outcomes. This grant would implement Everyday Leadership at four low-income elementary schools, (Hillcrest, Garfield, Whitney, and Morley Nelson). Approximately 100 students would participate. Everyday Leadership has proven to be highly effective. Grades have improved, behavioral problems have decreased and several students have applied for admission into accelerated learning programs. In 2021, the program received the Leadership in Public Education Award from the Idaho Association of Public School Administrators. This grant should only be paying the Rotary clubs' share of the project. If the entire program costs are paid by Rotary with the "Y" as a collaborator to provide the infrastructure for the program, your spending plan could be more clear on this, as it currently suggests that the grant is paying "Y" portions of the instructor and by inference the FICA and other personnel costs. Please tidy up your spending plan to make it clear that you're budgeting the Rotary cost of the project and not including others' expenses in the budget that are unrelated to Rotary's share of Everyday Leadership. Classes and community service projects will continue into May when invoices will be submitted and paid.
