Project Description

Country: Honduras

Location: Lancetilla Botan Garden

Total Budget: $7,500

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: The purpose of this project is to increase the size of the Centro Educativo Santos Juan Moncada y Centro de Prebasica Marin Hernan Cruz school to accommodate increasing enrollment and grades served.

Describe the project objectives:

To build a modest 160 sq ft addition to the Centro Educativo Santos Juan Moncada y Centro de Prebasica Marin Hernan Cruz school. This project will help meet the educational needs for an increasing number of students in a growing rural area within the Lancetilla Botanical Gardens near Tela, Honduras.

Describe the benefit to the community and/or improve lives:

This project will primarily support the area of focus of Rotary International of Basic Education and Literacy. The current one-room school house is not currently able to serve all the students within this rural community, and the community has requested a modest addition of one 160 sq ft classroom to increase services to kindergarteners. By addressing the pre-basic literacy and mathematics skills at an earlier age, these students will be better prepared for success as primary and intermediate aged students throughout their lives. According to John Dewey, the great American educator and philosopher, "education is not preparation for life; education is life itself." This philosophy truly emphasizes the importance of education in one's life, and that they are indeed interrelated, not separated. Providing access to a quality education is the first step to providing a better quality of life.

Sustainability:

The Honduran Department of Education will provide additional staffing and curriculum if the facilities exist to serve more students. Additionally, the parents and community members have a vested interest in their children's education. The materials and labor will all be locally sourced, and the cost to build is minimal ($46.87 per sq ft). Local families have already started to clear the land by hand to prepare for construction.

Active Rotarian Involvement:

The Greeley Centennial Rotary Club has been active in serving the Lancetilla Botanical Gardens for approximately 6 years. Prior service work has included the construction of two other modest buildings, the addition of electricity and or solar to four school sites, the purchase of uniforms and school furniture, the creation of a vocational sewing and technology center, and connecting the school to the internet, to name a few. We have partnered with the Craig Rotary Club and Greeley After Hours Club on most of these projects.

Members from our club have made two prior service trips to this rural area to help with the physical work and build relationships with our contacts with the community, as well as make contact with members of the Tela Rotary Club in 2017 and 2019.

We are planning another service trip in summer 2022 to participate in the project implementation and are looking forward to having members from the Craig Rotary Club join us. If all goes as planned, building construction should be completed in approximately three months (fall 2022).

Total Project Budget: $7,500

$7,500 from the Greeley Centennial Rotary and the 5440 District, consisting of $2,500 club dollars with matching funds of $5,000 from our district.

Publicity Plan:

Greeley Centennial Rotary will write an article as the project progresses updating both the club membership and District 5440. It is our hope that we'll be able to travel to the site in 2022 so as to have photos of project construction. We will submit the article to the local newspaper as well as post to our Facebook and Twitter feeds.
