Summary: 100+ Books for Thanks+Giving food baskets, and Weekly Reader Subscriptions for grades 1-3 to Laurel Elementary School children in Oceanside, CA
Laurel Elementary School, a Title 1 (low income) school, is located in the Crown Heights area, one of the most challenging areas in Oceanside. Last year Oceanside Rotary Club donated books and over $800 to Laurel Elementary for books and for Weekly Reader subscriptions for first graders. This year, with this matching grant, we will be able to donate Scholastic Weekly Reader subscriptions for all students in grades 1-3; Scholastic's Weekly Reader Classroom Magazines cover all the curriculum subjects teachers need to teach with current and engaging nonfiction as a way to introduce younger students to the joy of reading. Oceanside Rotary Club will also donate new books to be distributed to students as part of the annual Laurel Elementary School's Thanks+Giving food basket program. The goal of the program is to provide no less than 100 needy Oceanside families from Laurel Elementary with a Thanksgiving Food Gift Box: and this year, in addition to the Weekly Reader subscriptions for grades 1-3, our club goal is to include at least one book with each gift box that is age appropriate for the student. Club members will donate money and books for the project, and participate in distributing the books as part of the food basket program.
