Northern Colorado is an expensive place to live. With rents high and rising and the current inflation, life is unaffordable for many. Not least for single parents who are trying to raise a family on one income. Education is the path to a better life for parent and child. This project is an opportunity for a single parent with the grit and determination to complete an Associates degree while working and raising a family.
This project will contribute to the tuition at Front Range Community College for a deserving single parent who is eligible for the state College Opportunity Fund. Depending on the degree program, tuition rates range from $150 to $350 per credit hour. However, RAW will only contribute up to $625 per semester for up to two years towards the cost of tuition for an appropriate certificate program or Associate degree.
Most importantly the RAW education committee, consisting of experienced educators, will work closely with Project Self-Sufficiency to select the student and to mentor the student throughout their college program. They will advise the student on courses to take, career opportunities, additional sources of funding, and other matters related to their program of education.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
We propose to expand the scope of the scholarships supported by this project in two ways:
1. To support clients of Project Self-Sufficiency at Ames Community College as well as Front Range Community College.
2. For students who are receiving Federal or State grants that pay for tuition and fees, we shall provide child care or other living expenses to enable them to attend college. Project Self-Sufficiency actively supervises client expenditures for living expenses. However, members of the Club's Local Projects committee will also continually monitor the scholarship recipient's academic progress and living expenditures.
