Central Elementary School in Escondido is a Title I elementary school with over 500 students in their Kindergarten to 3rd grades. For nearly 80 years, Central Elementary has been "the neighborhood" school, located close to downtown Escondido, where most of the students live within walking distance, and the majority are of Latino and other cultural backgrounds. The school is subject to the new Common Core State Standards and the move toward more non-fiction reading material. To this end, we are proposing that a District Literacy Grant provide $1,000 toward the purchase of non-fiction reading material for their K-3 readers. These books would be housed in the school library as well as in the classrooms, and the titles chosen would support their social studies and science standards. As an addendum, it is noteworthy that although located in Escondido, the teachers bring their young students to our coastal San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center where they learn about caring for our environment as well as the wonders of estuary life in our lagoons. Books to support this hands-on learning will be a wonderful addition to their classroom studies. The project will require about 3 months to complete.
