Summary: Two-Hundred books provided to K-3 students at two Title I Schools in Encinitas, California
The Rotary Club of Encinitas has a long and productive relationship with two Title I Schools, Capri Elementary and Paul Ecke Central Elementary, in the Encinitas Union School District. The Club has identified literacy as a primary focus to narrowing the achievement gap for students not meeting academic proficiency. Both of these schools are in Federal Program Improvement, Capri Year 2 and Paul Ecke Central Year 3. At both schools, our Club has spent countless hours creating outdoor garden science labs where students can experience nature. Students are building inquiry and observation skills in these gardens. The gardens also provide an incredible environment for students to read and process information. To maximize student literacy skills the Rotary Club has identified the need to provide informational texts for students to motivate them to read and explore their garden habitats. We envision students reading in the garden individually, in small groups, in pairs with second and third graders reading to Kindergarteners and first-graders and Rotarians reading to students in the gardens. As part of the project, we will work with the two schools' representatives to develop questions that Rotarians will use to encourage thoughtful discussions of the books read and promote further research on the topics covered. We will purchase 100 books for each school. Approximately 350 K-3 students at each school site will be involved over the school year. We will work with the schools to maintain the books for use over multiple years so the project will grow and benefit additional students. Our goal is to have the books purchased and in use within 30-45 days after the grant award is received.
