Summary: Books for reading at home for kindergarten students at Julian Elementary School


Julian Elementary School is a Title 1 school, with 60% of students on the free and reduced-cost lunch program. It serves two Indian reservations and covers 620 sq. miles, making access to nearby libraries and educational resources difficult. Most families have parents with only a high school education. Funds will be used to purchase a set of 33 books and a CD that students use sequentially as they learn letters and sounds. The CD puts the sounds to music to enhance learning. They can read and re-read for practice and read these to Mom and Dad to display their learning. The 33 books are sequential in difficulty and support literacy practice at home. The 33 books are for students to take home and keep at home. A set will be purchased for each kindergarten student. Cost is $39/student for 27 students.

Materials will be purchased as soon as possible upon funding of the grant. We intend to organize a trip for our Del Mar Rotarians to visit the school and help deliver the materials when they arrive.
