The project funds will be used both to purchase Spanish literature, hardcopies of supported International Baccalaureate literature for Kinder and 1st, and eBooks for grades 2nd and 3rd that align with the IB units of inquiry. All students Kinder - 3rd , approximately 345, will utilize the books. Encinitas Union School District is a 1:1 iPad district, meaning that every student has an iPad. With a free app called "subtext" we can brings reading to life in the pages of the text with eBooks. (Each e-book is about $10 each and will be shared by six students this FY , but will be for students in the years to come as well, for no extra cost!) Subtext allows classroom groups to exchange ideas in the pages of digital texts, students to look up words that they do not know by simply clicking, and teachers to embed video within the pages to deepen the understanding. It also has a voice feature that allows the story to be read aloud. Ocean Knoll has the highest ELL population in the district and this powerful tool will provide these students with the desired support. We will also layer in enrichment materials, assignments and quizzes within the eBooks for all learners using Subtext. Project funds will be distributed this FY 13-14; Rotary branding will be placed on the individuals books and on the ipads as appropriate. The United Services E-Club and the Eco-Club of Solana Beach will support these global concept of electronic learning, so important in today's world, by visiting Ocean Knoll students and teachers on site and on-line and by promoting this contribution on Facebook. United Service E-Club members are part of a global community with members in 6 countries.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
Ocean Knoll Elementary is a Title 1 school as well as an honored candidate in the prestigious International Baccalaureate accreditation process. In light of these two qualifications and with the help of local rotary clubs: Eco Rotary of Solana Beach and E-Club of United Services, Ocean Knoll Spanish speaking students participated with students in Guatemala, "Skyping" back and forth and exchanging letters and pictures this past Spring, learning about each others local language and culture. (See pictures of students in Guatemala and Ocean Knoll) This is a prime example which International Rotary is attempting to do: promote world literacy and understanding of cultures. Clearly Ocean Knoll appreciates technology and is fully committed to using it for exciting applications, like reading with e-books, among other practices.
Rotary members of the the two clubs mentioned will also read in English and Spanish to younger students, K-1 in the classrooms, enriching their education with their world perspective.
