Each year the Rotary Club of Escondido sends scholarship application packages to each of 5 high schools in Escondido for interested seniors to complete. The purpose of the scholarship funds is to provide support for continuing education after graduation. This "continuing education" is not limited to 4-year colleges. It can be used for any form of skill development including community college or vocational training.
Interested applicants must complete a one-page essay explaining why they need the scholarship funds and their intended use. They must also provide a description of the availability of other funds to support their continuing education. With their application they must include a copy of their high school transcript and a minimum of two letters of recommendation. Application packages are returned to the Scholarship Chair for evaluation by a predetermined date. 50% of the eligibility is based on need.
All winners are invited to a special club meeting, together with their counselor and parents or guests. Winners are announced and presented with a certificate. In order to receive the scholarship funds, the students are required to provide proof of enrollment in continuing education in a format acceptable to the Chairperson.
The budget for this year's scholarship program is $20,000, which represents over a 30% decrease from last year due to COVID and the lack of fund raising opportunities. The club is requesting $2,000 from a District Grant to provide additional funding to help support this vital program.
