Summary: Normalize local Luiseno indigenous language in Oceanside
|
San Luis Rey President Mel Vernon succeeded last year in renaming San Luis Rey/Garrison Elementary School to Pablo Tak Elementary School to honor the first person to reduce the Oceanside indigenous Luiseno language to writing. Rotarian and Oceanside Arts Commissioner Julia Fister launched later 2021 her first Valley Arts Festival highlighting the arts and culture of the local indigenous of Oceanside, the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians. As a supporter of the United Nations International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL) 2022-2032, the Rotary Club would like to increase the visibility of the local indigenous language. We have budgeted $750 to print 150 t-shirts to be sold at next yearʻs festival using one-color ink, but we would like to normalize the prestige of the Luiseno language on our t-shirt by using a standard four-color process to print more of the shirts and sell them at a higher price. We hope to raise enough profit to be able to pay for the PETS conference this year. We hope to get legal recognition of Luiseno as the official indigenous language of the City of Oceanside.
