Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Staten Island, NY

Total Budget: $5,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene

Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: Volunteer Services

Summary: Addressing the Hunger Needs of senior citizens living at New Lane Housing Project on Staten Island, NY.

NEEDS:

With inflation forcing many to decide between food and other basic needs, the hardest group hit are senior citizens, many of which are on fixed incomes. The New Lane City Housing Project residents are in need of wholesome food which isn't available within walking distance.

BACKGROUND:

The New Lane Housing Project has 276 apartment mostly for senior citizens.

PROJECT EXPENDITURES:

The South Shore Rotary Club proposes to establish a food pantry at New Lane. Along with our $2500 we are requesting $2500 from the District to enhance our effort for the residents of the City Housing Project. The funds will be used for the food, van rental [if no free one van be found] and for misc. supplies (plastic bags, paper towels, etc.).

THE PROCESS:

Specifically, we plan to establish and staff the food pantry twice per month at the facility. The bimonthly food will consist of produce, meat, canned and boxed food.

In addition to distributing the food, we will procure and deliver the food to the pantry, set up and shut down and clean up the site after each session.

INVOLVEMENT OF CLUB MEMBERS:

We believe that the success of any project rides on the follow through. Our goal is to achieve at least 75% of our club members for this initiative. Additional sources of assistance may come from our Interact Clubs. There will be two sessions/month. Each session requires four volunteers for eight hours each, therefore, monthly we will have 2 [sessions]x 4 [volunteers]x 8 hours/volunteer]= 64 hours of volunteering/month or for the calendar year 768 hours staffing the food pantry.

THE PROCESS

Will consist of:

• Purchase food

• Pick up and deliver the food to the pantry

• Set up the tables and tent for the pantry

• Distribute the food

• Close the pantry and clean up the area
