Activity Type:
Community Development: Volunteer Services
Summary: Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. has a designation from the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA. As a form of community recognition and pride, the Croton Rotary will create a series of birdhouses (nest boxes) in our local parks to support bird conservation.
A Bluebird Trail is a common term used to refer to a series of birdhouses provided for bird conservation by providing birds with a safe place to breed. This may seem like an odd type of community service project but at a time when our world seems so stressed we believe turning to the great outdoors to appreciate the wonder of nature will be helpful to everyone. The Croton Rotary will work with the Village of Croton-on-Hudson (the DPW has agreed to install the birdhouses)along the Riverwalk and other public parks. The Riverwalk alone draws 1000s of visitors year round to our community. We will reach out to our schools to encourage older students to paint the birdhouses for display and create a fun school project for younger students to find and count the birdhouses as they enjoy the outdoors. We will encourage the local Boy/Girl Scouts to get involved. We will also work with our local small business, Feed the Birds, to help us utilize the appropriate type of houses for our area. This will be a community collaboration brought together by the Croton Rotary! Each house will contain a plague recognizing the Croton Rotary. All Croton Rotarians will be involved in any number of ways to bring this project to fruition. We will have an event early next year to recognize this new trail and will work with a group of local birders to maintain the houses as needed. Environmentally, birdhouses help with pest control, weed control, bird pollination, seed dispersal, and soil fertilization. Of course, the decorative aspect is a given but most important is the stress relief offered to everyone as they enjoy the sound of birds chirping and relaxing outdoors!

Bluebird Trail is progressing well. Many community members and members of the Croton Rotary have been involved. Birdhouses, nesting boxes and purple martin house have been installed. All carry rotary recognition. Two signs have been made explaining the project and carry the Rotary emblem. Initial village dedication planned for Earth Day celebration on 4/29 was canceled due to weather. The Croton Rotary is rescheduling the dedication event and arranging for articles in 2 local newspapers and the Village of Croton newsletter. Project completion date is 5/15/23.
