Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Camp Pendleton, Oceanside

Total Budget: $8,000

Area of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: Renovate/rehab the current 'club-house' for the School of Infantry Marines at Camp Pendleton

The Rotary Club of Carlsbad, in conjunction with our satellite club - Rotary Camp Pendleton, - is working on a project at the Area 51, School of Infantry. Upon graduation from boot camp, every Marine is sent to the School of Infantry (SOI) for training and subsequent assignment based on the skills/capabilities they demonstrate at school. Approximately 25,000 marines annually cycle through this fairly rigorous training school. After the intensive training these Marines need a space to unwind and decompress, in support of their mental health, with the extreme pressures they face.

This project would build/rehab a "club-house" at SOI for the Marines to relax after a tough day of training. Joining forces with multiple clubs in our district we can show support for our active duty military by helping them to create this needed space on base. An agreement is in place to note that a significant portion of the labor will be contributed by the Marine Corps.

We know the impact of stress reduction on day-to-day mental health during the best of times. The intensity of the programs and training for our military extends well beyond what many experience. Supporting positive mental health outlets is one way to show our support, not only of our local Marines, but it also goes a long way to demonstrate our recognition of the internal pressures they face.

With security on base in the recent years it's not viable to gain access to have hands-on project work. Let's face it, Camp Pendleton has an able-bodied team of young Marines ready to execute. What they need are funds from the community to complete this project. "The ask" is for our community members, businesses and organizations to get involved by gathering funds. Many hands make light work! If enough of us come together we can move the needle and get this project funded for completion.

The attached file shows photos of the current exterior and interior of the building needing rehab.
