Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Chicago

Total Budget: $750

Area of Focus: The environment

Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: General

Summary: The District will support local events in Little Village to support the Monarch Butterfly Boxcar Initiative as it travels through our District in Sep on its way to the monarch's winter habitat in El Rosario Sanctuary in Michoacan, Mexico.

This is a District 6450 Project.

The monarch butterfly population in North America continues to decline and has reached a critical level. Assisting the Monarch Butterfly project has been encouraged by Rotary International as part of Rotary's newly added 7th Area of Focus.

This project will assist in educating the general public about the need to increase Monarch habitats along the migration route between Canada and Mexico and the need to plant oyamel fir trees in the El Rosario Monarch sanctuary in the mountains of the Mexican state of Michoacan where the monarchs overwinter. The Chicago Little Village Club is sponsoring a float in the Mexican Independence Day Parade and other community outreach events. The boxcar will then continue to Mexico as it approximates the annual migration route. Families will be encouraged to participate in a Butterfly Bingo game that will be distributed with pollinator garden seed packets. Funds from this grant will be used to print Butterfly Bingo cards and for rental expenses for the pledge signing event (tables, chairs, etc.).

Please note that the Final Report Pam Brockman filed for P-4405 Monarch Butterfly Boxcar (Chicago Little Village) also covered P-4593 Monarch Butterfly Boxcar Challenge (District 6450). The report included the $750 DDF from the District and receipts for the expenditures. It made sense for this to be filed as 1 integrated report, as Pam did, since the activities of both projects were integrated. The District 6450 project was intended to provide supplemental DDF to the original project since the Monarch Project was an RI Presidential project that we were supporting District-wide through individual club endeavors.
