The Rotary Club of College is excited about this project because it supports literacy, provides an opportunity to promote healthy eating of fresh fruit and vegetables, supports our local farmers by purchasing their produce, and because it provides an opportunity for Rotary to participate in and be visible at an increasingly popular local event that targets a younger audience.
The Kids Literary Farmers Market (KLFM) is sponsored by the Stars of Gold Readers, a nonprofit with a mission of strengthening and supporting literacy connections within the community. In 2021 over 35 community groups set up booths to showcase programs and support for kids. Each booth had literacy-themed activities. Kids earned "kindness coins" for each activity and volunteers "sold" fresh fruit and vegetables to kids using coins as currency. Over 600 kids and parents attended in 2021 and over 500 books were given away. In 2022 over 40 community groups participated, over 1000 kids and parents attended and over 500 books were given away.
The Stars of Gold Readers has obtained books for this event but needs funding to purchase fruits and vegetables for the farmers market. Rotarians will volunteer throughout the KLFM.
