The Kodiak Rotary Club, in conjunction with the Kodiak Island Borough School District plans to supply books about the local native Alaskan culture (Alutiiq) to all third graders in the region, including those children home schooled and attending private schools. Third grade enrollment in the region is estimated at 175 students for the 2023 - 2024 school year. At a cost of $15.00 per book the total cost of the project is $2625. The Kodiak Rotary Club is requesting a District grant in the amount of $1300 to support this project.

This project supports basic education and literacy for all third grade students in the Kodiak region, as well as helping improve understanding and knowledge of the local native Alaskan culture. The books will help promote understanding between children of differing backgrounds, in addition to the literacy component.

The book: "Alutiiq Traditions: an Introduction to the Native Culture of the Kodiak Archipelago is a 71 page booklet written by the Alutiiq Museum to share information about Alutiiq culture and heritage. Each page in the booklet provides an introductory single-page lesson on one aspect of Alutiiq culture - from the environment of Kodiak Island and Who Are the Alutiiq? to the significance of oil lamps and traditional Alutiiq colors, this book give an orientation that is accessible for all ages. Interspersed with photographs, maps, and drawings each page of Alutiiq Traditions helps readers connect with Alutiiq culture".

The Kodiak Rotary Club is excited to share these informative books with third grade students in the Kodiak Island Borough.
