Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Ketchikan

Total Budget: $8,500

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: Privacy for travelling Mum and kids

Assembling a pod for privacy and security for feeding babies.

most airports around the US have lactation stations for mothers and kids. The Ketchikan Airport has lacked sufficient and accessible space for mothers and babies to feed in privacy. It is our goal to provide a space for mothers to feed their babies via a self contained "pod" that will provide the necessary security and privacy for the activity. The feeding pod is a self contained unit that can be easily transported throughout the airport. The unit will cost around $10,000, $5000 coming from the state Rotary District grant and $5,000 coming from the local 5010 Rotary club. Our timeline for the project will be purchasing the pod in January 2024 and installing by spring 2024. We plan on using our club's golden hammer group which consists of 6 skilled builders and another 12 regular members that will assist in the building of the feeding pod.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

I am writing to submit a revised grant application on behalf of First City Rotary to address the maintenance needs of a large number of community projects in our area. As you may know, due to large scale construction and upgrade projects at our Ketchikan airport, it was not possible to insert the originally proposed Lactation Pod.

Our proposal seeks to ensure the long-term sustainability and success of these previous valuable initiatives, which play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for residents in our community.

Background:

First City Rotary has long been committed to supporting and enriching our community through a diverse range of projects and programs aimed at promoting education, health, wellness, environmental stewardship, and cultural enrichment. Over the years, we have successfully implemented numerous initiatives that have had a positive impact on the lives of individuals and families in our area. All of these fall within the focus areas of Rotary.

While our community projects have achieved significant success in their respective areas, we recognize the importance of ongoing maintenance and upkeep to ensure their continued effectiveness and sustainability. Many of these projects require regular maintenance, repairs, and upgrades to remain functional and accessible to the community. We have not necessarily been able to do this to date.

Revised Project Overview:

The revised grant application seeks to change our funding to instead support the maintenance and upkeep of a variety of community projects administered by First City Rotary. These projects encompass a wide range of areas, including but not limited to:

• Public Parks and Recreational Facilities: Our community parks, playgrounds, and state park recreational facilities serve as vital spaces where residents can gather, relax, and engage in outdoor activities. Funding will be used to support maintenance tasks such as landscaping, equipment repairs, and bench and garbage can upgrades to ensure these spaces remain safe, clean, and accessible to all. We would also like to add more benches to our main walking trails and perform maintenance on the Ward Lake Picnic Shelter which is another highly used facility.

• Public Art Installations and Cultural Programs: Our installations, such as Music Moves, contribute to the vibrancy and cultural richness of our community. Funding will be used to maintain and preserve existing musical instruments at Music Moves at Rotary Beach, which are very high profile in our community.

Impact:

By investing in the maintenance of our community projects, we will ensure their continued availability and accessibility to residents. These projects serve as valuable assets that contribute to the health, well-being, and prosperity of our community, and it is essential that we prioritize their long-term sustainability.

With the unfortunate news that we are not able to insert a Lactation Pod into the Ketchikan International Airport, we believe that instead investing in the maintenance of our community projects is critical to preserving their impact and legacy for future generations. We are committed to stewarding these valuable assets responsibly and ensuring that they continue to serve as beacons of hope, inspiration, and opportunity for all members of our community.

Thank you for considering our revised grant application. We look forward to the opportunity to revise our grant in support of our shared mission to strengthen and enrich our community through sustainable and impactful initiatives. We should be able to provide the necessary paperwork very quickly following your approval.

Sincerely,

Ben Edwards
