Project Description Country: USA Location: Kenai, Alaska Total Budget: $5,500 Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Maternal and child health, The environment Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: General Summary: Upgrade and installation of Kenai Peninsula Food Bank irrigation system to improve efficiency and volunteer use. Background: The Kenai Peninsula Food Bank high tunnel collapsed in the winter of 2022-23. It is being replaced with a new structure. Bed orientation will be reconfigured inside of the high tunnel and through out the garden. The Food Bank does not currently have a day to day dedicated manager. A staff member from the warehouse tries to remember to turn the water on and off. A system that is careful about water placement and includes a timer is necessary. The business of crop irrigation needs to be easier and less time consuming, as well as water conserving. Purpose and Reach: Garden produce is used both at the Food Bank kitchen and given to patrons for home use. The Food Bank garden is the site of may small scale agriculture demonstrations. Finances: Irrigation Supplies ~ $5200.00 Garden Bed Supplies ~ $400.00 Soil Moisture Sensor ~ $600.00 Total $6,000.00 District 5010 Request $3,000.00; Kenai Club $3,000.00 Timeline: Materials will be purchased at the same time that the high tunnel is being installed in summer 2023. The installation will happen as soon as the construction site is clear and safe for Rotary and community volunteers. Rotary and Community Engagement: The USDA is assisting in prescribing the needed irrigation components. The staff of the local USDA office, Rotary members, and enthusiastic Food Bank volunteers will install both the irrigation system and the garden beds. Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed) P-4652 (Vietnam Community Assessment) was cancelled and the $4,000 DDF committed to that district grant was freed up. $1000 of this sum was distributed to Kenai Rotary. This club matched this sum with $1000. Follows the explanation of what the funds were used for: Additional $1,000 requested from the District to support Kenai Vocational Scholarship program. This project is directed towards vocational or trade school students who are in financial need. This need is the major criteria. We would rather help someone who otherwise would not be able to go to a Trade School than look towards the standard GPA. Applications are reviewed and monies dispersed around Mid-April or first of May. District Grant addition brings the total to $2,000 for one scholarship for 2024.
