Since the early 1990's the Soldotna Rotary Club has provided assistance to local families and individuals at Christmas through our Empty Stocking fund. Funds are raised within the club via donations (cash, services and gifts) to enable purchases of needed items for identified families. We raise the money my Rotarian donating gifts and service and than bidding on those items at club meeting's in November and December. The auctions are usually fun and spirited.
The families and their specific needs have been identified by Rotarians, local pastors school counselors and school principals. Typical help ranges from $100 to $300 per family. The contribution could be food items, gift certificates, presents for kids, or even to make a car payment or buy heating oil. We try to work through a contact person familiar with the family and their need(s). We also try to avoid duplication of other groups and select families who may not have been helped otherwise or have special needs. We normally spend around $5,500 per year.
