Anchorage East Rotary members and volunteers have hosted a Mobile Food Pantry distribution at the Fairview Rec Center in Anchorage, Alaska. Our clients who come to receive food each month are mostly in vehicles and food is able to be loaded into the client vehicles. We do seem 10 to 15 clients each month who are on foot, exposed to the elements and limited to what food they are able to receive based on their physical ability to carry the food. The proposed grant will provide funds for the following:
1. Purchase carts that on foot clients can use to transport food back to their homes and be re-used each month.
2. Purchase re-usable containers/bags for holding the food during transportation.
3. Purchase a pop-up tent to shelter clients from the elements. Tent will be branded with appropriate Rotary logo.
4. Purchase additional signage to direct clients to the distribution site
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
P-4652 (Vietnam Community Assessment) was cancelled and the $4,000 DDF committed to that district grant was freed up. $2,500 of this sum was distributed to Anchorage East Rotary. This club matched this sum with $2,500 and used the funds for:
1.The Anchorage Parks Foundation after-school program serving Title 1 schools:
Total Grant mount $2,500 - $1,250 from AER Club funds; $1,250 from DDF funds.
The grant will be used to cover costs associated with student transportation, food, and safety supplies for the Anchorage Park Foundation's Outdoor School in Parks program. It is offered to 5th grade students from Title 1 elementary schools. The program focuses on engaging students directly with their physical environment, local culture, history, and people. Students learn about forest ecology, local climate impacts, invasive species, stream ecology, renewable energy and wildlife safety at field study stations led by more than a dozen state, local and federal organizations. Each student will participate in a stewardship activity such as planting a native seedling tree, removing invasive species, or removing litter. The program will be completed before May 31, 2024.
2.Girls on the Run Spring 5K celebration event on May 11, 2024 held after the completion of their Spring after-school program which runs from February 26 to May 11, 2024.
Total Grant mount $2,500 - $1,250 from AER Club funds; $1,250 from DDF funds.
Details from their grant application:
•This is not your usual 5K. Our 5Ks are celebrations of lessons learned and goals realized by our girls who have completed the GOTR 10-week, 20-lesson season. Completing a 5K gives the girls a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Our 5Ks are noncompetitive events that are open to our community, accessible for all abilities, and a celebration for each person crossing the finish line!
•These events are much more than running. The pre-5K fun zone provides the girls, their families, and community members with many fun activities hosted by GOTR staff and volunteers. Many of our participants are identified as being economically disadvantaged and this event is often the first 5K for many; providing a great opportunity to promote healthy habits among school aged girls and their families who do not always have access to events of this type.
