Children in Lake Havasu City, by and large, do not have access to printed reading level aligned dictionaries at home or at school. Understanding how to use a dictionary is important for students in both printed and digital form. Students develop increased vocabulary, grammar, and literacy skills by using a dictionary. In addition to supporting students, academically. Lake Havasu Rotary also supports the whole child. Students need access to regular exercise. Many children do not have access to am appropriately fitting bike helmet. The physical and academic needs of children must be met to improve their overall health.
This project will meet those needs by giving all 3rd grade students a dictionary and all children who are in need of bike helmets that attend a back-to-school event a helmet. Bike helmets will be purchased in July 2023. Bike helmets will be distributed at a back-to-school community event where students are able to get needed vaccinations. Dictionaries will be purchased in August and distributed to students at schools in October.
Club members will be involved in the ordering and distribution. Club members will teach small lessons on dictionary use in schools across Lake Havasu. At schools, Rotarians teaching lessons will talk about what being a member of Rotary means and students will look up the word Rotary in the dictionary.
Information about this event will be shared out to local news organizations and through social media.
