The Darien club will purchase kid-friendly, shelf-stable food for approximately 150 students in Darien, Willowbrook and Burr Ridge schools. We will hold 5 to 6 packing nights during the school year. At each night, groups of volunteers will help unload the truck, break down bulk packaging and put food into one-kid, one-weekend packages. These packages will then be distributed to students by the schools counselors on Fridays.
Recipients are identified by school counselors as children who, due to hunger, are not effectively learning. The goal is for kids to start school on Monday not tired, hungry and/or sick. Thus they have a better chance of not falling behind, especially in the early grades.
