BACKGROUND:
One third of world's blind population is in India. India has 15 Million blind women. Surprisingly only 5% of them are capable to earn a living. Blind women in India are confined to perpetual darkness of the fears of society and poverty. A girl child, that is blind is considered burden by her own family.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
National Association for the Blind (NAB) has many centers throughout India. One such center, National Association of Blind Women and Disability Studies, is based in Delhi. The center welcomes blind women from all walks of life - urban and rural, to their second home and in some cases their only home! It teaches them both modern and contemporary professional skills/crafts which help them rediscover themselves and give them a new lease of life!
Our Rotary Club, in partnership with Rotary Club Delhi South Metropolitan (RCDSM), has worked with NAB in the past, as part of 2015 Interact Student Exchange and more recently by providing Roti (i.e, Indian tortilla) making machine for the Blind Bake Cafe to keep up with the growing demand from the customer base.
The NAB Discovering hands India program, has been organizing breast health camps in lower income communities since December 2022. The aim of these camps is to provide accessible breast health screening to women who may not have access to such services due to lack of awareness and high charges of screening tools available in hospitals or path labs.
One of the main challenges faced during these community screenings is the lack of closed rooms, which makes it difficult to provide adequate privacy for women during the screening process. And they feel discouraged to get screening done.
PROJECT SPECIFICS
National Association For Blind Women (NAB) District Grant covers two specific areas:
• Blind Bake Cafe is a fully equipped café, independently and managed by visually impaired women trained at the centre. Café offers a wide range of snacks and cooked food items, including cakes, cookies, breads, sandwiches, etc. Cafe's goal is to: Create avenues for visually impaired women in self employment by making them entrepreneurs in the long run.
• Discovering Hands - detection of breast cancer at a very early stage using Tactile Breast Examination technique pioneered by Dr. Frank Hoffmann, Gynecologist, from Germany. Blind See More! SCOPE
• Blind Bake Cafe funds will be used to enhance the infrastructure-
1. install pavers to replace worn out and muddy lawn area;
2. install awning over the service counter to shield cold storage and food and perishable goods from the sun
3. increase capacity to meet demand for the best selling food item: pizza!.
4. provide tables and chair for outdoor seating.
COST: $ 5,500. (conversion rate: $1.00 = Rs. 82.00)
• Discovering Hands funds will be used to provide a portable setup consisting of three rooms and a portable therapy bed. This setup will enable the creation of private screening areas in the community, allowing women to undergo screening in a more secure and comfortable environment.
