Summary: Dictionaries provided to 1200 3rd graders in the Glendale Elementary School District, Glendale, AZ USA
Our Club will purchase and distribute dictionaries to 1200 3rd graders in the Glendale Elementary School District (GESD), the vast majority of whom qualify for free or reduced school lunch given their socioeconomic status. Dictionaries promote basic education and literacy and are needed as determined through a survey of 3rd grade teachers from the Glendale Elementary School District. The students receiving the dictionaries use them throughout their elementary and secondary education and take them home for personal use. Third grade is critical for reading and writing literacy to ensure the students can read/write at grade-level and complete educational requirements to matriculate and graduate on time and become successful citizens in our community. Our Club has completed this project with GESD for several years. The students are always excited to receive their very own dictionary and the teachers are appreciative of this service project too.
The project funds are used to purchase the dictionaries through The Dictionary Project and to purchase labels with the Club's name and the Rotary 4-way-test, which are affixed to each dictionary by Club members before distribution to the 3rd graders. The Club members then volunteer to distribute the dictionaries directly to the 3rd graders in their classrooms across the 12 campuses in GESD. The project starts in September and ends in December so that the dictionaries are delivered within the fall semester of the school year. The Club will match the $2500 District Grant with $1500 of Club funds to complete the project within the $4,000 budget.
