Critical issues facing older adults are isolation and loneliness. For 15 years, the Rotary Club of Chicago Near South has worked in a community development partnership with St. James Catholic Church and Illinois Institute of Technology to provide fellowship and nutrition to seniors living alone in senior housing on Chicago's Southside. The event takes place on the Sunday before Thanksgiving with over 100 seniors served a Thanksgiving dinner in the Campus Center of Illinois Institute of Technology, and another 50 shut-in seniors provided with dinner delivered by volunteers. Project funds will be used to provide gifts to the seniors and for table decorations to supplement the complete thanksgiving meal provided by the university's caterer. All members of the Rotary Club are directly involved in serving the seniors and assisting them in their arrival and departure.
