Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Buckeye, AZ

Total Budget: $3,750

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Scholarship

Summary: To provide a scholarship for post secondary education or vocational training for students involved in C-CAP

The Rotary Club of Verrado has supported the Careers Through Culinary Arts Programs (C-CAP) in the Greater Phoenix Area, focusing on the West Valley areas of Goodyear, Avondale and Buckeye. Our membership is currently working with Agua Fria High School District to bring C-CAP programs to its 5 high schools. This grant will provide a scholarship to a student selected by C-CAP to pursue post secondary education or vocational training. Although not restricted to this a culinary or hospitality career training, most students are pursuing such a career track.

The Rotary Club of Verrado has members who are involved with C-CAP and the Agua Fria School District, who will help spearhead this project. Through these contacts we will seek to involve Rotarians as volunteers, career mentors and supporters of students. The development of careers staff for our local resorts, restaurants and other food service needs is critical in our rapidly growing community.

Here is an excerpt of information about C-CAP:

"Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP) is a workforce development nonprofit that provides underserved teens a pathway to success.

Annually, C-CAP provides culinary, job and life skills to over 20,000 middle-and-high school students in seven regions across the United States: New York City, Newark, Philadelphia and Camden, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington DC/Maryland/Northern Virginia and Arizona.

Founded in 1990 by Richard Grausman, this 33 year-old nonprofit strives to help further food and social justice, as well as equity and inclusion by providing tools for success. Starting in middle schools, we provide culinary-and-wellness curriculum, and in high schools also provide an integrated approach to employment in the food sector via internships/apprenticeships, job shadows, mentorship, and work opportunities, college and career advising, and higher-education scholarships, along with product and food donations. The success of our alumni is proof of our methodology and the work we have done. To date, we have worked with 350,000 students and awarded $66 million in scholarships. C-CAP has transformed thousands of lives in a meaningful way. The urgency to help these diverse communities has never been more critical."
