Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Boise, ID

Total Budget: $900

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Provide nutritious weekend meals for 2 food-insecure Southwest Idaho children for a year

Childhood hunger is a prevalent issue in all Idaho communities. Many children leave school for the weekend knowing that their next meal will not come until they return to school the following Monday. e5400 would like to support the Idaho Foodbank in their endeavor to send these children home on the weekends with enough nutrition to keep their brains and bodies fueled and ready to learn by the time they get their next school meal Monday morning. In 2022, the Idaho Foodbank distributed 63,149 backpacks to 2,651 students in 173 participating Southwestern Idaho schools, where 94% of administrators agreed that the program was 'very beneficial to children and families'. Further, the Idaho Foodbank has developed a program to get these backpacks to remote-learning students as well by utilizing their public school bus routes to make backpacks available. As the only eClub in District 5400, this supports our focus on children's education in two ways - by providing the fuel their brains need and encouraging virtual learning in rural communities that may make it more difficult for children to attend school in-person and receive proper nutrition to grow.

Every year, the Idaho Foodbank hosts a 'Back to School Virtual Telethon' to raise funds for the Backpack Program. This year's event will be hosted on September 28th, 2023. It costs $300 to support one student each weekend for the entire school year. e5400 will combine district grant funds in addition to their own to support 3 Southwestern Idaho students for the entire school year. Rotarians will volunteer at the Idaho Food Bank in support of its efforts to feed Idaho kids.

Couple of things... 1)Your club can ask for $575 of DDF, putting in only $25 of club money. Adjust your financing if you'd like to get a bigger grant. 2)Rotary Foundation grants require "active Rotarian involvement". Please add to your narrative the volunteer activities your club intends to do as part of this project. Volunteering at the Food Bank in Meridian could meet this requirement. Please update your narrative and financing before sending for signatures.

I have cancelled the club signature process. Your narrative needs to include a statement saying what volunteer services your club members will engage in as part of this project. Donating money is not considered "active Rotarian involvement" as required by The Rotary Foundation. Please add your volunteer statement, then restart the club signature process.

Another option for you on the financing front: $100 contribution from the club and $800 of DDF for a $900 project. This would feed 3 kids for the same investment from the club. If you want to do this, make changes to your application. You also need to include a statement regarding the "active participation by Rotarians," IOW what type of hands-on service you'll be doing to support the project. Your club contribution of $$ does not count toward this requirement. Call me if you have questions or need help.

Your 2023-24 district grant project will be included in D5400's block grant application to The Rotary Foundation in July. Do not place orders or spend money on the project until you hear from the district that TRF has approved our block grant, as you cannot be reimbursed for expenses incurred prior to TRF approval. Call Marianne Barker at 208 308-5617 if you have any questions. Thank you!

Please do not reply to this email. You should have received your grant by now, mailed to your club’s mailing address Aug. 11. We are using a bill payer service this year, and the envelope will look different than in the past. Please tell your treasurer to watch for it, and not to discard. Please call me if you don’t have your check (208) 308-5617. Ignore the physical address on the check – D5400 is still PO Box 9592, Boise, ID 83707.

Your check for $800 was mailed to on 8/11/23, sent from DL Evans Bank. It has not cleared our account. Did you receive your grant money? If yes, please deposit the check so the district can complete its reporting to TRF; if not, please call me 208 308-5617. Thank you for participating in Rotary Foundation district grants!

I have audited your report. The receipt from the Food Bank needs to states that the money was used for the back pack program and not for administrative costs. Please request a corrected letter and upload it to the documents tab, when finished, click reported on the administrative side of the description tab.

The district funds were not used to pay for financing; the club took care of it. This is clearly stated in the breakdown of funds, where $800 from the district went towards the backpack program and the rest was covered by the club (including the rest of the backpack overhead; the district's funds did not cover the entire thing). Upon donation, the Foodbank asks if you wish to cover the transaction fees of the credit card as well, which we did because we put the burden of processing a credit card on them and didn't want to take away from the program. They do not have line items for these. Are you asking me to to create a falsified receipt using the Foodbank's logo to make it easier for the district to comprehend my cost breakdown?

by Christine Huot

Thank you for your response. Of course there would be no way I would ask you to falsify anything on any report. All that we need, and I am sure it would be very simple, is for you to go to your contact at the Food Bank and ask for a letter stating that your donation would be spent on the backpacks. When you have it just upload it and resubmit your report. Thank you for your help in helping us close this grant. If you have questions please feel free to call me. 661-703-0414
