Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Boise

Total Budget: $1,675

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Boise Centennial Rotary would like to request a grant from District 5400 District Block Grant to enhance basic education and literacy in the Boise Community Schools.

Boise Centennial Rotary would like to request a grant of $1381 from District 5400 District Block Grant to enhance basic education and literacy in the Boise Community Schools.

Community Schools, along with the active participation of local businesses, individuals, and organizations, are a proven strategy for effectively addressing our students' most pressing needs.

Public schools in Boise, like many in urban communities across the country, face a myriad of challenges. Poverty, domestic instability and fraying social safety nets are only a handful of some of the barriers our schools, teachers, students, and families must attempt to overcome every day.

The demographics of the Boise School District today, radically different than less than 20 years ago, may shock you:

• 49% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch

• 600 - 800 children are homeless or unaccompanied (no parent or guardian)

• 1,175 are refugee students

• 85 languages are spoken in our schools

The need is clear. With this grant, Boise Centennial Rotary Club will partner with the Community Schools to secure needed materials to support education, literacy, and overall improved student learning.

Our goals are:

1) to provide teachers and their classrooms with reading materials to improve educational outcomes.

2) to spread awareness of Rotary's mission by placing a Rotary sticker in the reading materials.

3) to engage at least half of our Club in volunteer opportunities around this project including delivering materials, putting stickers in books, and presenting to children in the classroom.

Why not in your first sentence, substitute "reading materials" for the words "enhance basic education and literacy" We like to see exactly what you're planning to do and it is so helpful to have that at the beginning of your application, rather than the end. We don't even need the statistics. We believe that a need exists. Simple applications are the best: what you're going to provide, to whom, with what partners (if any) and how Rotarians will participate. Consider changing up your application a bit to make it easier on our end, then send for signatures by clicking "start club signature process" on the administration side of the description tab. Thanks for your participation in Rotary Foundation district grants!
