Summary: Theater Works: Provide almost 2,000 students exposure to theater arts and classroom curriculum
Rotary clubs of Sun City and Peoria North are partnering with Theater Works to provide exposure to the arts for local schools. The schools targeted are ones that no longer have theater and arts taught within the standard curriculum.
The program covers a variety of areas: vocabulary, history discussions, literacy (reading the books), theme discussions, and access to the live production.
The District Grant funds will be used to purchase the books and curriculum for the classrooms, cover the cost of the transportation and discounted tickets for the live production.
Based on numbers from last year, We plan to target 1600 students (which is approximately 64 classrooms) in the Washington Elementary School District, in grades PreK through 2nd.
The classroom teachers who attend a field trip to The Fir Tree will receive a copy of the book The Little Fir Tree, and a study guide of lesson plans related to the story and play. The lessons can be scaffolded to meet students at their current academic levels, and were specifically designed to meet AZ Academic Standards for Earth and Space Science, Life Science, Civics, Economics, Geography, and English Language Arts.
We also plan to have an additional event A Celebration of Seuss! For the Celebration of Seuss event, we plan to target 800 students in the Peoria School District (approximately 32 classrooms) in grades PreK through 2nd. For this engagement, we will offer an "add-on" option for classrooms to receive a pre- or post-show visit from a TheaterWorks teaching artist, who will lead a drama-infused story time of a Dr. Seuss book, leaving behind a copy of the book for the classroom teacher. This option will satisfy multiple ELA Standard goals for teachers, as well as engage students in a kinesthetic learning opportunity connected directly to the Celebration of Seuss experience.
