Summary: Hand held ultrasound imaging to treat patients in Milot, Haiti
Hopital Sacre Coeur in Milot, Haiti is the only medical facility for 225,000 people in rural Haiti. In 2009 the hospital had 49, 161 outpatient visits, 4,643 admissions, 1,226 obstetrical deliveries, and 1,316 surgeries. The hospital provides a mobile clinic to over 1,200 patients. The hospital has minimal imaging capability for the diagnosis of medical and surgical disease. There is no CT scan and the ultrasound machines currently available are poorly functioning and are often not available to the surgery clinic. In addition, it is almost impossible to provide point of service imaging with the machines because there are few technicians. Hand held ultrasound machines (slightly bigger then a hand held computer) have now become available and are very simple to use. Having a hand held ultrasound machine available in the surgical and obstetric clinic would aid in diagnostic accuracy and increase the efficiency of surgical and obstetrical care at the hospital. I will provide training of local technicians and provide a manual for volunteer physicians--271 medical professionals volunteer at the hospital annually. I have been going to the hospital for 1 week each year since 2002 and I will personally train the local Haitian surgeon in its use and maintenance.
