Summary: Create and help maintain a raised bed vegetable garden at RH Dana Elementary School
School gardens help teach children about the environment, how healthy food is grown and where it comes from and encourage healthy eating. Gardening offers a hands-on and engaging learning experience and opportunities to work together as a group and develop social skills. Students and teachers alike benefit from the stress reduction and social engagement that gardening together provides. We propose purchasing six raised garden beds, soil, supplies and vegetable plants for RH Dana Elementary. The beds will be an appropriate height so special needs students who have physical challenges may also be able to participate. Club members will research and consult with local master gardeners and plant nurseries and purchase the raised beds, assemble the beds, purchase the soil, supplies and plants, work together with the students to plant the plants and lead the regular maintenance and care of the garden while involving the students as much as possible and is age-appropriate. Members will also consult with teachers and local and national experts to develop some learning materials and introductory programs on garden care for the children. Raised beds 6 x $120 = $720; Food safe wood sealer $35; Bulk soil (1.5 cubic yards) $120; Soil delivery $75; Plants (3 flats, 16 plants each @ $100 = $300; Organic fertilizer (1 fifty pound bag) $80 = $1,330;

Project was delayed. Plans are underway for garden build days in June, July and August 2024. We will purchase the materials by May 15 and will upload the receipts. The garden project will be more robust than was originally planned. RH Dana Elementary has a large group of involved parents who have been active in the planning for the garden and in raising funds. Two parents, one who is a landscape architect and one who works as an architect, developed a site plan and list of suggested native plants for an eco friendly garden. Given the larger scope of the plans, the school district required RH Dana Elementary to submit the plans and gain district approval before proceeding, and that approval process took many months and was the cause of the delay.
