Recently immigrated children and families from South Sudan are at risk of losing their cultural identity, including language, history, and cultural heritage, as they immerse into their new lives in the San Diego area. Additionally, these children and families face significant mental health challenges as they navigate the loss of their homeland and integration into the United States culture. The Thok-Naath Cultural Program provides Saturday classes on South Sudanese language, culture, art and dance, food, and history while also serving as a touchpoint for the community. An emphasis is also placed on mental health support. The budget for the program is $3450, and project funds will be used for teacher stipends, transportation, art and dance activities, and native food. Escondido East Rotary Club will provide $1725, and we are asking for matching funds from the district. Club members will support the program by volunteering with set up and clean up and serving meals, with Thomas Nyang serving as the lead organizer. http://www.jarweng.org
