Project Description

Country: USA

Location: San Diego

Total Budget: $2,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Volunteer Services

Summary: Volunteer project in San Diego, CA donating household items for transitional age foster youth where volunteers will help youth select the items they need and move into their first home.

Just in Time for Foster Youth's (JIT) is a San Diego nonprofit based in Mission Valley that focuses on engaging a caring community to help transition age foster youth (ages 18-26) achieve self-sufficiency and well-being. They envision a future in which every youth leaving the foster care system has a community of caring adults waiting for them after 18. They believe consistent, long-term help from the heart is the foundation for the success of youth so they can thrive and enjoy productive, satisfying lives.

My First Home is one of the many services JIT provides. It helps 18-26 year olds who were in the foster care system furnish their living spaces and make them safe, stable places to call home. Any youth who qualifies for My First Home is invited to a shopping day at their Distribution Center, where they pair up with a volunteer shopper to choose the items needed to turn their apartment into a welcoming, comfortable place to call home. The Distribution Center is stocked with everything needed to create a firm foundation, from gently-used furniture and décor to new beds, appliances and cleaning supplies. Then, volunteer movers assist participants in transporting the items to the youth's apartment and setting everything up. Volunteers are also able to offer guidance on smart purchasing and home expenses moving forward.

Examples of items offered at JIT's Distribution Center include dressers, night stands, sofas and loveseats, tables, chairs, desks, new towel sets, new silverware sets, new dishware sets, new glassware sets, new pots and pans, new comforters and sheet sets, new pillows, lamps, new vacuums, new microwaves, new toasters, artwork, rugs, new cleaning supplies and much, much more.

We would like to assist Just in Time for Foster Youth in stocking their warehouse by purchasing modest furnishings and basic household items with the help of a district grant. We will shop for these items in November 2023 then deliver them to JIT's Distribution Center. We will then participate in at least one volunteer day (tentatively scheduled for December 9, 2023) to assist participants in selecting items for their residence, help move the items to their residence, and help them set up the items.

Up to 25 volunteers are needed for the volunteer day at the Distribution Center. Along with our own club members, we plan to recruit individuals from the general public and members from Rotaract and Rotary clubs to join us.
