Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Romeoville Illinois

Total Budget: $1,500

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Provide 6 books to each 3rd grade class (475 students) in the Village of Romeoville Illinois.

The goal is to provide books desired by teachers for their 3rd grade classes beyond the books provided by the school district. The books will be of high interest to the students, selected by the teachers, and will of an educational nature. The books will foster enhanced and increased educational and literacy opportunities for the students.

The club will purchase up to five books for each third grade in-class library and each class will receive a copy of "Have You Filled a Bucket Today" by Carol McCloud or another book chosen by the club. Each teacher will be provided an Expanded Educator's Edition of the book. In total an estimated 120 books shall be provided to the Romeoville 3rd grade classrooms. Each student will also receive a Rotary based bookmark.

Valley View 365U School District and Romeoville High School Interact Club will assist with the project. The school district has allowed the club to partnership with the project in the past, one of the club's Rotarians works for RHS and has allowed her to gather information for the books for each class, purchase the books for the club (sales tax free!) and have staff distribute them to all the third-grade classrooms that choose to not have the Rotarians present the books. The school district will collaborate with the club to design, produce and distribute at no cost to the club Four Way Test based bookmarks to each third-grade student.

Krista Simpson, who works for the school district, will spearheaded the project for the club by collaborating with the teachers regarding their book selections, ordering the books, distributing the book, acting as a liaison between the club and school district and club and Interact Club. Most of the club will be involved with which one book, beyond the teachers' selections, to select for each and all classrooms. Several Rotarians will attend and assist with the presentation to the various third grade classes, including reading the Romeoville Rotary Club chosen book to the students. Several Rotarians will be involved with the grant administration.
