Summary: Surgical equipment and Supplies for Surgery of Facial-Cleft Children in Calakmul-Xpujil, Campeche, Mexico
There is a tremendous need for assistance in the treatment and surgical correction of cleft-facial deformities existing abundantly in the Mayan population located in the rural regions of Calamul-Xpujil, Campeche, Mexico. Currently, an exploratory team has made Rotary and Health system contacts and provided a screening clinic for evaluating the needs of the region. A few test surgical cases were performed successfully demonstrating adequacy of the supporting infrastructure of the region to support a biennial surgical treatment project for helping the region's children afflicted with facial cleft deformities.
The need of Sterile Surgical supplies and specialized surgical instruments to assist the volunteer surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses has been determined and with these purchased by the grant proceeds, the project can continue and become self sufficient with time. Local doctors, Rotarians, D.I.F. governmental health care providers all will be working with the MG team to put into place a longitudinal treatment center for these Mayan Children affected by their birth defects and allow them an opportunity to enter their community with the ability to contribute productively.l Club members will travel and deliver supplies, equipment, train the site and work in the clinic to provide children with their surgeries.
