NOTE: THIS IS A DISTRICT 6450 PROJECT, NOT A CLUB PROJECT.
Over 50% of our seniors residing in nursing homes have no close family. There is an epidemic of loneliness, as many rarely receive visits or communications from family or friends. This project is an opportunity for March 1-3, 2024 Midwest PETS attendees to help through the Cards for Seniors Service Project. It's modeled off a project we have been successfully running in District 6450 for the last 2 years.
Attendees will write notes of cheer in Spring cards for seniors in nursing homes while they are at PETS. About 1,200 decorative Spring-themed cards with envelopes will be made by District 6450 Rotarian Linda Yates with her card making and stamping equipment. During check in, attendees will be given 2-3 cards each to complete while at PETS, along with Instructions for Card Writers. The completed cards will be collected throughout the seminar via collection boxes in the hotel lobby. The DGEs will evenly divide up the completed, returned cards and distribute them to selected nursing homes in their Districts. This will be about 200 cards per District, which will be enough for 1-2 nursing homes in each District.
While small, it will be easy to complete and give each District a feel for the project. Districts could add their own touches, such as sweet treats or flowers for nursing home staff. It's hoped this will inspire Districts to initiate their own Cards for Seniors projects locally.
The requested grant funds will help with the cost for the paper stock for the cards and envelopes.
