Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Yonkers, NY

Total Budget: $4,600

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: 10,000 #2 pencils. coloring posters showing the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and colored pencils will be donated to all 1st grade classes (appx 100) in the Yonkers public schools

The Rotary Club of Yonkers-East Yonkers is proposing a two-part literacy project. The first part of the project is to provide #2 pencils to every 1st grade class in the public schools in the city of Yonkers. With an enrollment of 25,375 students, the Yonkers public school district is the fourth largest public school district in New York State behind New York City, Buffalo and Rochester. Like the other major school districts, Yonkers is an urban community with many needs seeking tax dollars. Except for the COVID year of 2021, our Club has partnered with the Yonkers school district to help bridge the resource gap by providing pencils to all 1st graders in the district. With appx 100 first grade classrooms in Yonkers, the 10,000 pencils we are proposing to donate will enable each classroom to have a supply of 100 pencils. Also, as part of our work to increase the public image of Rotary and our club, each pencil will be imprinted with the name of our club and our website address and each class will receive a pencil case imprinted with the name of our club. The second part of this literacy project is to provide every1st grade class (appx 100) and student (appx 1,800) with an introduction to the 17 United Nations Goals for Sustainable Development Goals ("SDG"). The "Raising Global Kidizens" organization (www.raisingglobalkidizens.com) has developed a 1 page poster to introduce 1st graders to the SDG goals. We propose to donate a large poster (3' x 4') and pencils for coloring the poster to each 1st grade class and individual posters (some will be in Spanish) to each 1st grade student. Our club members will bring the pencils and posters to each of the 31 public schools in Yonkers with a transmittal letter from our club president. The cost of this project will be $4,600 ($3,979 for the pencils, pencil cases, coloring pencils and $620 for 31 large posters ($8.40 each) and 1,800 individual posters ($0.20 each)
